As the summer weather kicks in, our pea plants on the Toddler and Preschool playgrounds are really starting to produce a bumper crop of sugar snap peas. Peas were planted along the back of the garden beds in early April, back when it seemed like the warm weather was never going to get here. They slowly but surely climbed the fences and put out white and pink flowers.
This week and next week, they will be producing plenty of peas. Children and teachers have fun plucking them off the plants and eating them on the playground. Food doesn’t get any fresher than this!
By the end of the month, it will be too hot for the peas to thrive, they prefer cooler weather. As the plants turn brown and wilt, we’ll pull them out and put them into our compost bins.
Beans have already been planted to replace the spring peas, they will be climbing the fences on the playground this summer.
